Image of rooftops of crowded city in Lebanon

Mapping Bourj Hammoud is a collaborative ethnographic art and film project by Joanne Nucho and Rosy Kuftedjian.

These drawings were produced by a number of collaborators and participants throughout the production of The Narrow Streets of Bourj Hammoud, a nonfiction film about the experiences of residents of Bourj Hammoud, both recent arrivals and those who have lived their whole lives in this suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. A trailer for the film can be found here. These drawings were prompted by two simple questions: “What has changed in this place? What do you remember?” However, the drawings are not merely a conduit for eliciting memories. They are also, in themselves, significant works of art.

This project was completed with generous support from a Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ethnographic Film from the Wenner Gren Foundation. For more information about the project or to organize a screening, please contact joanne.nucho@pomona.edu
